Letter to the editor: Paper checks ending Sept. 30
As a local tax professional, I want to alert the public — especially senior citizens — about an important change on the horizon. There hasn’t been much publicized about this, but the federal government has announced it will no longer accept or issue paper checks after Sept. 30. This affects everything from Social Security payments and tax refunds to estimated tax payments made by check.
For many taxpayers who have long relied upon paper checks, this shift may cause confusion and concern. This new policy encourages taxpayers to consider transitioning to electronic payment methods, such as direct deposit, online platforms or digital wallets. The goal is increased efficiency and was established when DOGE was in full swing.
Obviously, this can create challenges for seniors and others who lack access to the internet or banking services. The U.S. Treasury has opened a public comment period through June 30; you can review details and submit comments at regulations.gov. Of course, the only way to submit a comment is online.
Share your concerns, if any, and help shape a process that is fair for all Americans, regardless of their ability or comfort with digital payments.
