In her article “Legislation proposed to regulate book bans in Pennsylvania school districts” (Oct. 11, TribLIVE), Megan Tomasic mentions in great detail how widespread this is and that the books questioned dealt primarily with LGBTQ+ or racial themes. She identified the two books that caused local protests by parents. She gave careful attention to many proposals that school boards might adopt to have review committees set up.
She concluded with quotes from two people with opposing views. One, state Sen. Ryan Aument, R-Lancaster County, charged that school boards often treat parents in a dismissive way about this issue. The other, state Sen. Chris Rabb, D-Philadelphia, incredulously offered that students should not be restricted by board decisions about what books they can or can’t have access to.
So the inmates are to be in control of the asylum? One of the books listed in the article was “All Boys Aren’t Blue.” Tomasic gives it an overview but provides no details of why parents objected. One is left to conclude that it was the subject and not the content that was opposed. I have no idea if she actually read this book. I have read excerpts online that your paper would and could not print. I urge parents to look for it as I did.
