Letter to the editor: PBMs crucial in fight against costly health care
Like most in the Keystone State, I am deeply concerned about the escalating costs of health care, particularly prescription drugs. A recent government study revealed that Pennsylvania residents spend a yearly average of $13,557 on health care, exceeding the national average by over $2,000. With health care costs already burdensome on regular Pennsylvanians, it’s important for our leaders to recognize the important role pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) play in reducing costs.
Many large companies, small businesses and unions choose to work with PBMs to provide quality, affordable pharmacy benefits for workers and their families. PBMs offer a variety of different coverage options so employers and unions can select the plan that works best for them and their employees and members. PBMs take on pharmaceutical manufacturers to negotiate down the sky-high list prices of prescription drugs and encourage the use of generics instead of expensive name-brand medications. They also work with pharmacies to offer lower costs for patients at the counter.
Instead of targeting PBMs, policymakers should focus on comprehensive reforms that address the root causes of rising health care expenses. This could include policies such as greater transparency in drug pricing or holding more drug manufacturers accountable.
Let’s work toward a more sustainable policy that will benefit all Pennsylvanians, preserving the essential role of PBMs in our drug supply chain and ensuring access to the best health care for all Pennsylvanians.
