Letter to the editor: PBMs support Pa. pharmacies

Tribune-Review

Unfortunately, the article “Pharmacists open up to state Senate committee about financial struggles at hearing” (April 15, TribLive) omitted any perspective from pharmacy benefit managers themselves. That type of journalism is harmful and can have unintended consequences.

What was not in the article? The core mission of PBMs is to negotiate with drug companies to drive down the cost of prescription drugs and create affordable access for patients, saving Pennsylvanians an average of $1,040 per person every year.

PBMs are not seeking to put pharmacies of any kind out of business. PBMs recognize the vital role pharmacies play in providing access to prescription drugs for patients. In fact, PBMs have implemented programs for rural independent pharmacies in Pennsylvania that provide higher reimbursement rates.

PBMs will continue building strong relationships with Pennsylvania pharmacies and working every day to secure savings on prescription drugs for Pennsylvania patients. We urge legislators to not lose sight of what’s making the pharmacy market work for patients — and what’s really driving up costs.
