One Christmas Eve, while I was closing a pharmacy in Pittsburgh, a woman rushed in with her young son, crying from an ear infection. She had run across the parking lot hoping to make it before we locked the doors. I had already begun to close, but there was no question — I stayed and filled her son’s prescription. The relief on her face reminded me why pharmacists matter. These moments are the heartbeat of our profession.

Every day I see patients facing tough challenges — people battling cancer or chronic conditions who worry about affording their medications. Recently, I helped a patient whose treatment costs felt overwhelming. By working with her care team and securing financial assistance, we made sure she could focus on healing instead of the burden of cost.

Pharmacists today work under mounting pressures. The pace is relentless, yet we remain a lifeline for millions. Behind every prescription is a story of resilience, from patients and the pharmacists who support them.

I learned this from my father, a trusted pharmacist who showed me that pharmacy is built on relationships and trust. Starting in retail, I saw how pharmacists are often the first — and sometimes only — health care professionals people turn to. Today, in specialty pharmacy, I help patients with complex conditions navigate treatment, answer questions and overcome barriers so they never face illness alone.

In an era when health care can feel impersonal, pharmacists bring humanity back into the equation. In every prescription, there is a story — and in every story, a chance to make a difference.
