Natural gas and oil continue to play an increasingly important role every day in the U.S. New data reveals natural gas use in the U.S. hit a record high in 2018, largely due to its role in producing more than 30% of the country’s electricity. On the other hand, crude oil production is responsible for fueling our vehicles and air travel, as well as producing a number of other modern necessities.

Despite these factors, anti-pipeline protesters across the country have opposed the permitted construction of energy infrastructure projects.

Here in Pennsylvania, misinformation has continued to spread regarding the Mariner East Pipeline system. Environmental activists have used local connections to challenge the permitted project, including launching investigations and promoting tribal politics. One activist even took matters into her own hands last summer when she started fires and spread spoiled food near construction sites.

Local news outlets also incorrectly reported the pipeline’s construction “may jeopardize” an Exton softball league’s spring season — despite the developer’s commitment to adjusting the project’s work schedule to specifically avoid interfering with its season.

It’s time to focus on the facts: A strong energy industry is key to a strong economy. Pipelines are the safest, most efficient method of transporting oil and gas products — and Mariner East is no different. Pennsylvania’s policymakers, stakeholders, and community members must come together and prioritize investment in our critical energy infrastructure starting with Mariner East.
