One sure way to highlight the need to control supposedly peaceful protests that morph into violent confrontation, looting and destruction of property is for police to withdraw from the troubled areas. Law enforcement officers en masse should take a one-week vacation and let mayors, city officials, and their political allies and local police critics deal with confrontations up-front and personal to demonstrate how to handle these flare-ups.

I don’t know of any group of professionals that after a problem has been uncovered, immediate legal proceedings are put in motion and the accused put in jail, that people feel empowered to injure, kill and destroy the property of others at will.
