I recently heard concern that representatives being sworn into Congress are no longer required to use the phrase “So help me God,” or use a Bible when being installed. This is not new. Neither has ever been a requirement. There have been presidents who were sworn in over a book of law with the intention that they were pledging to uphold the Constitution and laws of our land.
I would prefer elected officials honor God with their hearts rather than their lips. The actions they take to protect and serve the citizens of our country, particularly the most poor and vulnerable, will be more telling than a phrase that may or may not be sincere.
