Letter to the editor: Powerball and government assistance

The Powerball lottery game recently went up to $1.8 billion. Thank goodness; I felt obligated to play it, but only bought three $2 tickets. Only two lucky or maybe unlucky people got all the winning numbers. I wasn’t that surprised or unhappy that I didn’t win. I have a little extra money to buy lottery tickets.

But how many poor people played the Powerball that were so desperate that they can’t buy food or pay their bills threw away money on the lottery? If you depend on SNAP benefits, are on Medicaid, got to food banks or the government pays most of your rent, you shouldn’t be playing the lottery. How really poor are you? Perhaps you are just not prioritizing what is important. Maybe it is time to reexamine some federal assistance programs.
