Hats off to Kaley Bastine, a 7-year-old who has raised a large sum of money to support our local police departments (“Harrison’s Kaley Bastine spreading police fundraising efforts to New Kensington,” Aug. 28,TribLIVE). What a terrific young lady.

During my 35 years as a teacher in the Highlands School District, I had the privilege of meeting and teaching thousands of students, many of whom left a lasting impression on me. They made teaching enjoyable and worthwhile. Lucky for us, after graduation, many of them remained in the area; some are members of our local police departments. Hats off also to local officers Justin Bouch, Ken Hanzlik, Chris Cottone, Doug Helgert and Kurt Jendrejewski.
