I really appreciated Renatta Signorini’s article “Westmoreland County Prison prayer groups dispersed, raising religious freedom concerns” (Dec. 18, TribLive). Having worked in the criminal justice system for almost 40 years, I understand the mission of any correctional facility in maintaining inmate control in the interest of safety and security. As a person of faith, I believe there is nothing more redemptive than when inmates come together to pray to a sovereign God. That that has to have an impact on their view of life and how they will conduct themselves.

The prison officials certainly have my support in doing what they need to do, and Tim Williamson has my regard in what he wants to accomplish with his prayer group. It is my prayer that there will be a balance found between the two concerns.
