Letter to the editor: Proposed energy bill violates our rights
House Bill 502, now moving through the Pennsylvania Senate, proposes a new “RESET Board” to fast-track energy projects — including power plants — by bypassing local zoning laws. While advertised as a clean energy initiative, the bill also covers fossil-fuel infrastructure and places final siting decisions in the hands of a seven-member, unelected board dominated by state agencies and industry representatives.
This shift not only sidelines municipalities, but it also may violate Pennsylvania’s Environmental Rights Amendment, which guarantees every resident the right to clean air, pure water and preservation of natural resources. Communities deserve a say in projects that affect their health, environment and safety.
Proposed amendments, including community meetings or token representation, don’t solve the problem. Local control is still stripped away.
We urge residents to contact their state representatives and Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton. Tell them to oppose HB 502 and protect our constitutional rights.
