I write to voice my strong support for my union, the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA).

I was troubled to read Joseph P. Ferguson’s letter criticizing PSEA (“PSEA leadership should be challenged,” April 2) based on vague claims that the union wasn’t aggressive enough. The PSEA I know has always stood strong for its members and for the students we teach and serve. And the strength of our union is found in our collective voice.

We come together in this association so that we can bargain for competitive compensation and safe working conditions. We speak out for our students and advocate for policies that will enhance their learning. And we stand up against wrongheaded legislation that will undermine our schools and the people who count on them.

PSEA is really the hard-working people who teach our students and operate our schools every day. It’s me and my colleagues — all 178,000 of us.

I’m glad we are able to come together to speak out for what is right.
