Letter to the editor: Religious leaders shouldn't tell us how to vote

I must respond to Rev. Tony Joseph’s letter “Biden, Harris on abortion, marriage” (Aug. 28, TribLIVE), admonishing us that we shouldn’t support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris because they are pro-choice and support same-sex marriage.

First of all, the reverend should remember the adage that just as the government mustn’t tell us how to worship, nor should religious leaders tell us how to vote. There is a reason we have separation of church and state.

Second, it’s time that people stopped assuming that being pro-choice means being pro-abortion. Pro-choice means every woman has the right to make her own medical decisions. It’s also been the law for nearly 50 years.

Additionally, same-sex marriage has also been the law since 2015. Perhaps the reverend should remember Corinthians, and that of the three things that last forever, “the greatest of these is love.”

So, Father, I say go and worship as you see fit, but please stop telling us free citizens how to vote.
