Officer Leonard C. Miller, the first Black police officer for Apollo, was a distinguished graduate of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Police Academy. He began his tour of duty Jan. 1, 1980, and was killed at 21 in the line of duty Jan. 3, 1980.
Miller was genuine by nature with a congenial personality and had an exceptionally good rapport with young people, especially troubled youth. He listened to people intently and resolved matters amicably — a shining example of community policing.
The community will never forget Leonard C. Miller. Several fitting tributes honor Miller: an annual scholarship for an Apollo-Ridge High School graduate majoring in criminal justice; the Leonard C. Miller Bridge; and the Leonard C. Miller Memorial and Town Mural. Historical artifacts are displayed at the Apollo borough office and police station, the local historical society and the Center for Law Enforcement Information Technology at Lenape Technical School.
The greater Apollo community recognizes all law enforcement personnel who serve or have served — those who have taken a sworn oath to uphold the Constitution to protect and serve with duty, honor and courage. The work of law enforcement officers is a special calling and is challenging and difficult. They accept the call to duty and service with full knowledge of the risks and dangers. Several Alle-Kiski police officers have made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to protect and serve the public good.
Leonard C. Miller loved people, loved his community and loved life. He will always be remembered as a good friend, committed citizen and fellow police officer.
