“For Russian diplomats, disinformation is part of the job” was a front-page headline April 20. It explained how Russia uses propaganda to justify Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. I see a straight line between the Kremlin tactics and the GOP. As Leonard Pitts Jr. stated, “The Republican Party is a clear and present danger” (April 19, TribLIVE).

During his time in office, President Trump seemed to only appoint those who would lie to the American people, from press secretaries to the attorney general. When he lost the election, Trump summoned congressmen and lawyers (some already have been fined or disbarred) to spread his big lie of a stolen election. I believe these co-conspirators are insurrectionists who knew better, but their lust for power was greater than their ethics. Now they want to shield the truth of their betrayals to the Constitution, but the courts aren’t buying it.

Will true conservatives close their eyes and vote party line to continue the assault on democracy, or will they join independents and Democrats who are fully woke to the liars among us? Definition of “woke” in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “aware and attentive to important facts and issues, especially of race and social injustice.” There is no social justice when people of color, women, the LGBTQ community and children are demonized by the GOP as it spreads propaganda and fear about these groups. Yes, the GOP is the enemy of our democracy.
