Letter to the editor: Republicans aren’t so great at managing economy

I have never understood why so many people believe the Republicans are better than the Democrats at managing the economy. Ten of the last 11 recessions began under Republican presidents. Since Herbert Hoover (1928), all Democratic administrations ended with a higher growth rate than all of the Republicans, with one exception. (Ronald Reagan’s second term had a slightly higher growth rate than Jimmy Carter’s.)

Since World War II, six of the seven administrations with the highest job creation rates were Democratic.

Since Reagan, each Republican president has increased the federal deficit by 65% or more. Donald Trump added $8 trillion to it.

In the past election, Democrats claimed Republicans had no plan for dealing with inflation. They do, but it’s not one they want to talk about. Recession. Just watch CNBC on any given morning. If you are upset about rising prices, just try losing your job instead.

Some people believe that a healthy capitalism requires low growth and high unemployment. Most don’t.
