Letter to the editor: Reschenthaler & our elections

Tribune-Review
| Friday, August 30, 2019 10:00 a.m.

It is plain to see from his op-ed (“Mueller show’s over; it’s time to move on,” Aug. 7, TribLIVE) that my representative, Guy Reschenthaler, does not believe that a) the Russians compromised our 2016 presidential election; b) the confirmation of our nation’s 17 intelligence agencies that the Russians had compromised our 2016 presidential election; and c) there is any evidence of presidential obstruction in Robert Mueller’s report.

I base my above comments relative to Reschenthaler’s partisan-based questions for Mueller that had no reference to the Russian interference in our presidential election. Also, I mention his failure to vote for, along with all but one of his Republican colleagues in the House, House Resolution 2722 — Securing America’s Federal Elections Act (Safe Act). This bill, passed by the House, 225-184, June 27, helps to establish standard voting requirements for voting systems throughout the country in an effort to thwart Russian and foreign interference.

Unfortunately, the Safe Act, the only piece of legislation that has been created to help improve our voting system for the 2020 election, lies dormant in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not brought it up for a vote and probably won’t.

If there is not bipartisan legislative movement in Congress to terminate Russian or other foreign influence in our elections, our democracy becomes a quick sinking ship.
