The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for gift-giving, when millions purchase presents meant to bring joy and connection. Among those gifts are lottery tickets, popular among adults, 18 and older, who enjoy a moment of entertainment and the opportunity to benefit older Pennsylvanians in the process. But lottery games are intended only for those 18 and older.
A child should never receive a lottery ticket. Even when given with good intentions, the message can be confusing. Research from the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) shows many adults who struggle with gambling first encountered it as children through a gift. That is why the NCPG’s Gift Responsibly Campaign, supported by the PA Lottery, urges families to pause and consider the messages their gifts send.
For adults of legal age, lottery tickets can be part of holiday entertainment when approached responsibly. Families are encouraged to talk openly about chance, set spending limits and model healthy expectations.
