The always informative Tribune- Review tells me that there exists a separate and autonomous neighborhood in my city of residence called “West Jeannette” (“West Jeannette will get spruced up, thanks to canceled mission trip,” July 15, TribLIVE). I’ve heard of this mysterious place before and always wondered if it had its separate post office, police department, fire department, elected municipal officials, etc.

I’ve never heard of East Jeannette, or North Jeannette or South Jeannette. Is there something unique about “West Jeannette?” Could it be that many of its residents are Black? Is that what sets it apart?

When so many people nationwide are examining our racist past, destroying statues and advocating renaming the Washington Redskins and military installations in the South named for Confederate generals, maybe it’s time to retire the term “West Jeannette.”
