Letter to the editor: Road salt destroying bridges, water, roads, cars

Tribune-Review

Regarding the article “PennDOT needs to find real alternative to tolling” (July 5, TribLIVE): I believe road salt took that bridge down near Pittsburgh. If PennDOT wants to save a billion dollars, they should quit spreading road salt. It’s destroying our freshwater ecosystem, our bridges, our cars and just about everything we’ve worked so hard for.

Why do you think PennDOT will not tell us what brought that bridge down? They said it was about national security, but in my opinion, the cause was definitely corrosion, aka road salt.

There is a big freshwater drought out West; freshwater supplies are going to be tough to find. So what do we do in Pennsylvania? We put sodium chloride in it and turn it into salt water. Are our leaders too stupid to understand what we are doing to ourselves? I would say yes.

The answer to this problem is to make it a plows-only state. It’s that simple.
