Letter to the editor: Safety more important than open churches

Tribune-Review

Well said, Edna Martorell (“Regulations not infringing on religion,” May 10, TribLIVE). I am stunned by the words of the Rev. Tony Joseph (“Government shouldn’t keep us from church,” May 4, TribLIVE). Despite over 1.3 million cases of coronavirus in our country, and an abundance of medical data on the frightening contagious nature of this disease, Joseph’s focus appears to be on politics and his displeasure with government orders designed to save lives and protect the population, particularly the elderly and sick.

The virus is not Democratic or Republican, it is not Christian or Jew, it is not young or old, and it is not any particular race or religion. What it is is dangerous, and only when everyone takes the appropriate precautions can we slow its spread. Elected decision-makers are doing the best that they can with imperfect information that changes daily.

In my opinion, all of our leaders, especially our church leaders, should demonstrate responsibility, pragmatism and respect for government directives aimed at minimizing the spread of covid-19, regardless of the inconvenience. I am a Christian whether or not my church doors are open.

While we all miss our churches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship, let’s focus not on cynicism and division, but instead on finding ways to help others, and keeping ourselves and others safe.
