Hunter Randy Santucci is right on the money (“Opponents of Saturday deer opener cite negative economic, social impacts,” May 20, TribLIVE). The game commission needs to go back to Monday for opening day. They took all the fun out of camp and the camaraderie that camps have before hunting. Going to camp Saturday and having Saturday and Sunday to be together with friends and family is all part of hunting.

So much has changed since this Saturday opening, and not for the good. On the way to camp on Saturday morning, we used to stop in New Bethlehem for a big hunters’ breakfast at Hawthorn Area Volunteer Fire Department. Can’t do that now. Saturday we would go into town just to have some dessert after a nice meal at camp. No more.

It’s just not the same. Get back to Monday opening day. So what, you miss a day of work, or the kids miss one day of school. Camp is an education, too. Believe me, it is.
