I was shocked and horrified to learn that for decades, our nation’s horses have been shuttled into the horse slaughter pipelines, delivered to Canada and Mexico and killed for food. I am so grateful to Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Mary Gay Scanlon and Madeleine Dean for sponsoring the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, which would prevent the cruel slaughter of horses for human consumption in the U.S. and prohibit the export of American horses for that same purpose abroad.

According to the ASPCA, 83% of the American public, including horse owners, trainers, riders and enthusiasts, oppose horse slaughter. Groups including the Jockey Club, the U.S. Trotting Association and the Homes for Horses Coalition want to see an end to the slaughter pipeline. After what I have learned of the horrible realities facing slaughtered horses, you can add me to that list.

I thank Fitzpatrick, Scanlon and Dean for sponsoring the SAFE Act. Our horses deserve protection.
