Regarding Peter Roff’s op-ed “How to save the post office” (Dec. 16, TribLive): Postal workers and mail carriers are forced to handle far too many charitable/junk items/realtor mailings. Implement the following:
1. Limit how many bulk/junk mail items one organization can pump into the system in a month. The constant pleading for money via the mail system has led to the ruination of needed services for businesses/residential customers and bankrupted the system. Some charitable organizations, while very worthy, are flooding our mailboxes on a weekly basis (e.g., March of Dimes). This doesn’t include all of the local organizations also asking for funds in addition to bank/realtor mailings.
The latest request is from “Feeding America.” Who/what is this organization? I average at least 10 requests weekly, making my first stop after retrieving the mail the recycle bin in my garage.
2. Discontinue Saturday mail delivery.
Hard choices need to be made by a competent leader and soon.
