Letter to the editor: Science has made our lives better

Tribune-Review

Science has given us so many things to make our lives better, such as microwave ovens, televisions and computers, and amazing technologies such as medical imaging and genetic engineering. We gladly accept these conveniences, but whenever they tell us something inconvenient, too many of us would rather believe a scientifically ignorant pathological liar and con man who says coronavirus will disappear by a miracle.

The scientists tell us that a little inconvenience now will prevent major illness and possible death later. What’s so hard about a mask and staying six feet apart for a few months? Letter-writer John Watson (“Social distancing a dangerous experiment,” May 21, TribLIVE) worries about emotional damage caused by social distancing. None of us likes this, but it’s better than being dead. He says he can’t wear a mask. Anyone can — or stay home. Governor’s orders, like it or not. His mask is not about him — it is to protect others, for whom he expresses no concern in his letter. I wear a mask to protect him, and I would appreciate if he would do the same for me.

Another catastrophe that is sneaking up on us is climate change. President Trump seems to refuse to allow the phrase to be uttered in his presence, and for some incomprehensible reason there are so many blind sheep who follow his lead. I wish people would stop to think about what this horrible man is doing to our country, the earth and the future of our children.

The scientists are warning us. We would do well to listen to the experts.
