Letter to the editor: Self-destruction of Republican Party

The former Republican Party, which is now the Party of Trump, seems to have self-destructed. The party seems to collectively believe it can do no wrong. When a person or group firmly believes it is always right, it can no longer grow, learn or adapt. It is more like a solid wall than a living being. When you can’t even imagine being wrong, you will lie, cheat, steal and use brute force to accomplish your goals, since only being right matters. Facts and science are only useful to you if they can be used to support your foregone conclusions. When they don’t, you label them as hoaxes.

In my opinion, the Party of Trump, knowing it is always right, is willing to destroy democracy to get what it wants. It seeks to steal elections while claiming that when it loses, elections were stolen from it. We see Republican-controlled state legislatures working to undermine the results of the last presidential election and also making it more difficult for entire groups of Democrats to vote in future elections.

Pennsylvania Senate Republicans just voted to go after information about those who voted in the presidential election (“Pa. Senate GOP moves to collect private voter information in controversial review of 2020 election,” Sept 15, TribLIVE). While this is a wild goose chase, I believe it will serve to intimidate voters who will be concerned about their personal information.

The Party of Trump is rotting from the inside with the potential of poisoning the core values of America.
