When we last spoke, “Steelers serving up skunk” (March 7, TribLive) was the topic, but the solution offered today is DOSE (Department of Steelers Efficiency).
With apologies to Elon Musk, I nominate the Honorable Mark Madden and Tim Benz to continue to weed out the waste, fraud and abuse permeating this once proud organization. The endless pursuit of senior citizen quarterbacks has ruined the brand. One can only conclude the next Steelers workout facility (we’ll pay for it) will be located next to a UPMC Senior Care!
Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson and now Aaron Rodgers (a 41-year-old who won five games last year) are clear examples of players well past their prime. The time wasted in this pursuit would have been better spent signing free agents (defensive linemen, etc.) who could fill the many holes this team has.
Clearly Art Rooney, Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan have learned nothing from last year’s wide receiver debacle. Andy Weidl was brought in to evaluate talent but has no decision-making authority. What a waste.
Here’s a thought: Let’s ride with Mason Rudolph and spend the money elsewhere. A franchise quarterback is not necessary to win a Super Bowl. At least six others have done so. The penny-wise and dollar-foolish approach doesn’t work. Hire a coach capable of quarterback development. Maybe we need a double DOSE.
