I am writing to express my disappointment bordering on anger and disgust at the coach allowing and encouraging Geibel Catholic’s basketball team running up the score against Mapletown, 106-19, on Jan. 29. The details are particularly troubling in light of our Christian mission to be compassionate.
Geibel Catholic was winning 76-17 at the end of the third quarter. In that situation, many good coaches who value the development of all girls, not just their own girls, would take their star off the court and put in the benchwarmers to finish the game and give them some play time, and also to show the other team some “mercy.”
Are you aware of the “mercy rule” — the running of the clock at the end of the game to spare the team being crushed more embarrassment? It was in effect for the fourth quarter, but coach Sara Larkin showed no mercy and kept her star (daughter) in the game, resulting in a fourth-quarter score of 30-2.
Final score — 106-19. No mercy, no let-up, no compassion. The entire staff should be ashamed of this coach and how she treated the other team.
