Recently I had political yard signs I placed on my property stolen … not just once, but five times within two weeks. My emotions ranged from disgust to anger at the disrespect shown to my private property and the assault on my constitutional right to free speech. I ask if this is the society we want to live in.

Stealing political signs infringes on the democratic process and reflects a disrespect for differing viewpoints. The political signs on my property represent my beliefs and my right to express them publicly. When someone resorts to theft to silence or undermine my beliefs, they undermine the principles of free speech and civil discourse foundational to a healthy democracy. Instead of fostering dialogue and understanding, this act creates division and hostility, which detracts from the political engagement we need in our communities.

The act of stealing political signs sets a dangerous precedent for disagreement. It is never right to resort to petty vandalism and intimidation instead of debating ideas or challenging viewpoints through discussion and persuasion. Such behavior alienates potential allies and produces animosity that can escalate into more serious conflicts.

In a time when political polarization is rampant, we must prioritize respectful engagement and find constructive ways to express dissent.
