In his letter “Why aren’t we autonomous?” (Dec. 17, TribLIVE), Don Carrera asks the whereabouts of all the free people who previously opposed despotic abuse of political authority. The tragedy he observes is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction. The refusal to take sides on moral issues is a silent acquiescence to evil.
