Western Pennsylvania’s “deaths of despair” — suicide, addiction and overdose — highlight the need for mental health solutions that go beyond therapy’s traditional, one-on-one approach. Rather than centering solely on individual resilience, effective mental health policies must regenerate the community institutions — churches, Little Leagues and civic groups — that provide vital social connection and meaning.

An entrepreneurial approach to mental health can help foster these community ties. Local partnerships, peer-led support networks and innovative funding can empower communities to take ownership of mental health challenges, weaving mental health resources directly into the social fabric. Instead of isolating care in clinical settings, mental health initiatives should reconnect people to each other, restoring institutions that strengthen community resilience.

By focusing on community-based, entrepreneurial mental health solutions, we can address the broader social isolation contributing to despair in the Rust Belt. Mental health policy that builds up community institutions offers a pathway to resilience that is deeply rooted, accessible and tailored to local needs, redefining mental health care as a shared responsibility and a tool for community renewal.
