Letter to the editor: St. Lad's a sad example of ignoring value of history
Recent actions regarding St. Ladislaus Church in Natrona should be of concern to all citizens (“Time capsule unearthed at St. Ladislaus Church reveals 120-year-old treasures,” Jan. 12, TribLive).
One need only to travel through Europe to discover the historical and emotional value of old churches. Some say they are not worth keeping because of the lack of financial support.
In Europe, the government stepped in to preserve some of these very old edifices. It’s too late for St. Lad’s, as we affectionately called this beautiful structure, because someone ignored the value of history. Now I understand the church bell is being moved out of town. Seriously, can you imagine the Liberty Bell anywhere other than Philadelphia?
Fortunately, there exists an organization that hopes to preserve Natrona’s history in the hope that locals will feel the pride of this small town and for others to enjoy the positive climate they’re creating. The church bell and time capsule are crucial to the goals of a community trying preserve what is cherished most in life, our fondest memories.
