Letter to the editor: Start here to improve our current situation
As I have said before, the first thing we need to demand is term limits on all political offices.
Another suggestion is all people running for office must provide a list of current concerns and how they would vote. Those running for reelection must provide the same list and how they voted.
Vote for integrity by eliminating anyone who speaks negatively about an opponent.
Bring them down to our level by requiring them to use their own cars and pay for auto insurance, providing a small allowance for fuel. Then they would face some of our problems.
At the polls there would be no straight-party voting, which requires at least some thought for each vote. I usually vote straight party myself, so this is a shame on me as well.
High school needs to reinstate a Problems of Democracy class so we graduate people prepared to vote wisely.
Also (for the same reason) we need an elective “life skills” class that teaches how to make a budget, write checks and balance a checkbook, plus what it costs to rent or buy a home and car and how much you actually pay back on a debt that charges whatever percent interest. A grade of 85% or above transfers a half-credit to a college education at any college. Also students should be taught where to apply for college grants, scholarships, loans, etc.
This won’t solve everything but we have to start somewhere!
