According to the article “Greensburg eyes expansion of business zoning to include self-storage units” (June 15, TribLIVE), the City of Greensburg and its mayor are considering allowing storage facilities in dilapidated buildings on Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

This challenge for the city is to change over the old, empty, rotting buildings to exciting places where business and new residents for retail, restaurants, housing, etc. will come, stay and flourish.

It surely seems obvious that building storage facilities within the downtown area will go against the opportunities for exciting retail growth and lead to traffic congestion for trucks coming in to load and take out items and allow precedence for other low level facilities since there are so easy to change into and not maintain.

City council and the mayor need to address this risk and go to visit other smaller cities that have achieved successful transformation.
