We would like to echo Pitt-Greensburg President Robert Gregerson in his recent call for continuing state funding that makes a college education at Pitt more affordable for Pennsylvania students (“Pitt-Greensburg’s state discount critical for students, local economy,” June 16, TribLIVE). We are two of the 10,000 Pitt-Greensburg alumni Gregerson mentioned in his commentary and can testify to the critical place the school has in our region and its future.

Pitt-Greensburg is embedded in our community and is focused on what our region needs, whether it is nurses and other health professionals, teachers, police, IT professionals or future entrepreneurs.

Our region, and the entire state, is dealing with workforce shortages. If we want to compete with the rest of the country and the world, we must be giving Pennsylvania students affordable and close-to-home options for a college education. Thanks to state funding to support the in-state tuition discount, more Pennsylvania students stay here for college and decide to stay here after they graduate.

State funding for Pitt is an investment worth continuing.
