Letter to the editor: Support Pa. gun violence prevention
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has proposed investing $100 million in statewide gun violence prevention programing and education. For over 20 years the Foundation of HOPE has been serving the Greater Pittsburgh region by empowering people impacted by the criminal justice system to renew their faith, rebuild their lives and restore positive relationships. On a daily basis we work to reduce gun and other forms of violence through intervention and prevention programs that instill respect for human life, provide positive alternatives and break the cycle of crime and recidivism that all too often escalates and perpetuates violence throughout our communities.
We urge all Pennsylvanians to support Shapiro’s proposal. Contact your elected representatives and strongly encourage them to invest in community-centered programs that intervene before a shooting, stop the illegal flow of guns into our communities, and use evidenced-based research to guide future policies and initiatives.
In their June 3, 2022, Letter to Congress on Gun Violence, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote: “There is something deeply wrong with a culture where these acts of violence are increasingly common. There must be dialogue followed by concrete action to bring about a broader social renewal that addresses all aspects of the crisis, including mental health, the state of families, the valuation of life, the influence of entertainment and gaming industries, bullying, and the availability of firearms.”
Shapiro is proposing concrete action. Let’s not waste any more time or lives!
