Letter to the editor: Teachers’ politics have no place in schools

What’s funny to me about Penn-Trafford Education Association president Shaun Rinier’s letter “Teaching critical race theory an issue for local districts, not NEA” (July 19, TribLIVE) was his concern about the National Education Association supporting CRT and that they were not concerned with their conservative members’ position. My question to Rinier is, what does a teacher’s political party or position have to do with what they teach?

Your national teachers union should support teaching accurate history, not politically favored history. If you had explained why CRT is not accurate, then maybe you have a point, but to proclaim your reasoning to be because you are conservative is unacceptable.

The teachers union in Pennsylvania is out of control. Their pension is broke and actually being investigated by the FBI. I would believe this to be Rinier’s concern, but I assume it isn’t because he is a political person and knows if he supports the Republican Party, they will take covid relief money, as President Trump warned, to prop up the teachers pension plan so they can continue to receive their 80% pension when they retire, as those of us in the real world pay.

We need to dissolve the PSERS board and disburse the funds in it to the teachers so they can invest in their own plans. It can be removed from the list of things taxpayers need to bail out, and teachers can control their own future with their own plans.

Why am I the only person other than Trump who sees this problem and wants it fixed?
