It is not often that a building has a central place in the hearts and minds of a community, but the former Grandview Elementary School in Tarentum is such a place. Still actively educating young people as Highlands Elementary School, it stands as a reminder of our history, while enriching our daily lives with its sturdy, graceful presence.

The entire community is grateful to the Highlands School District for its years of maintaining and improving the structure. We are particularly indebted to John and Sally Greco Jr. for their generous donation to preserve the clock tower (“Highlands seeking bids for Tarentum clock tower restoration,” April 19, TribLIVE). Our little valley wouldn’t be the same without that iconic building, nor without the kind of open-hearted people the Grecos represent. Thank you.
