Donald Trump now has the U.S. Postal Service in his sights. The GOP has for years been out to privatize the Postal Service. The GOP Congress saddled the service with decades of debt when for some reason a decade or so ago they required the service to fund their pension obligations half a century in advance. Yes, people who will not be hired until 2070.

Trump also thinks the USPS is giving his archenemy (and actual successful businessman Jeff Bezos) reduced rates, as the post office is sometimes the final leg of Amazon deliveries.

Trump keeps claiming rates on Amazon should be raised to make the service profitable even though numerous studies have shown it would not. Rural America (Trump’s base) would really be in a bad way if the USPS shut down, as other private delivery services refuse to go where the USPS does. In fact they rely on the USPS for the last leg of delivery just like Amazon. Prescriptions, Social Security checks and many other necessities would be gone.

Here’s to all USPS workers still out there every day helping this country keep running. Sadly, some have already perished from the virus, and many are sick. They all deserve a big thanks.
