Letter to the editor: The American flag, a symbol of freedom

Today, Flag Day, celebrates the American flag as a symbol of freedom, history and national strength.

In our schools, when children and youth recite the Pledge of Allegiance, it is my hope that they do so with pride, dignity and respect for America as the greatest nation in the world.

The American flag — 50 white stars representing our states on a blue field — and the colors of red, white and blue are uniquely designed. Each color serves as a reminder of the principles on which the United States was founded and has meaning.

Red symbolizes soldiers’ courage and bravery throughout history and represents the bloodshed for freedom. Red also signifies patriotism, strength, unity and dedication, embodying America’s values.

White symbolizes purity, innocence and integrity. It embodies the Founders’ ideals of freedom, justice, equality and a corruption-free nation, emphasizing honesty and fairness in government and citizens.

Blue symbolizes justice, perseverance and vigilance for America to protect its freedoms despite challenges like wars and civil unrest. The blue in the flag reflects the nation’s resilience and strength to defend its ideals, a powerful symbol of resolve.

For me, the American flag truly symbolizes our freedom to live in the United States. I am profoundly thankful for the men and women who have sacrificed and for those military personnel who continue to serve in our homeland and across the world.

On Flag Day and throughout the year, we “pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
