Letter to the editor: The damage of selfishness

Tribune-Review

Selfishness is sinful, contradicting everything Christians stand for. Selfishness disregards compassion, justice and the command to love one another.

Our region has experienced a 9% increase in precipitation over the past decade and a staggering 34% rise this year alone. Selfish sinful personal gain accelerates environmental degradation, extreme weather events and endangering countless lives. We are paying for the damage because the selfish refused to listen to truth. Science warned us for decades. We reap what we sow.

Equally troubling is the refusal to offer refuge to those in need. Selfish sinful policies that turn away migrants fleeing violence and persecution violate the Christian call to welcome strangers and show hospitality. Christians cannot be hypocrites, supporting expanded legalimmigration policies that would never turn away a refugee.

Furthermore, sinful selfishness perpetuates systemic injustice. It fuels economic inequality, marginalizes vulnerable communities and erodes trust in institutions that should uphold fairness and equality for all.

Christians reject privilege, instead called to take up their cross to embody selflessness, empathy and compassion. Christians prioritize the needs of others, working toward a more just and equitable society.

It’s time to confront the evils of sinful selfishness, embracing a values-driven approach that honors human dignity, cares for our planet and promotes social justice. Heed God’s teachings of love and kindness. Work toward a world where all are valued and cared for.
