As he exits after a chaotic year as the leader of the Kennedy Center, Richard Grenell has been hailed by the president as having “done an excellent job … outstanding work.”

I wonder if the president would commend the captain of the Titanic in similar terms.

Grenell, at the direction of Donald Trump, of course, has brought the once-thriving Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to its knees. Top artists and companies have left, and ticket sales have collapsed.

For some, the final straw was the president hijacking the facility to force his name onto it, an infantile act.

I had the privilege of attending a symphony concert at the facility several years ago. It was a glorious evening. I would not visit for any event today. We can only hope that the immense damage that has been inflicted on this cultural jewel can be reversed when a reasonable human being again occupies the White House.
