Letter to the editor: The railroad is a great place to work
The article “Interest in skilled trades surges nearly 14%” (June 18, TribLive) confirms what those of us in the railroad industry are experiencing firsthand. The demand for skilled trade workers — welders, mechanics, electricians, equipment operators, engineers and conductors — for jobs within freight railroads, as well as contractors and suppliers who support rail and transit lines, is stronger than ever. These companies have an urgent need to fill high-paying jobs with great benefits in an expanding industry that employs innovative technology.
As noted, Norfolk Southern and other rail-focused companies and associations are offering incentives to attract skilled workers. The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) offers scholarships to students attending trade schools, colleges and universities to help with education expenses. Candidates must be employed by an NRC member company or be a child or grandchild of an employee. There are many other railroad associations offering similar programs.
I have been fortunate to work in the railroad industry for nearly 50 years. Come aboard! It’s a rewarding place to grow your career.
