Letter to the editor: The story of autism is complex

Tribune-Review

There has been some discussion recently about autistic children excluded from field trips. On the face it seems discriminating, but what do you know about autism?

Autism is not a singular condition but a blanket covering a range of disabilities from mild to profound. In some cases it is hardly noticable, while in others it is quite debilitating. In most cases, a change in environment or routine is upsetting, and once again a range of reactions will occur, from mild to extreme. Also in some cases these people are extremely strong and can become quite violent.

So you see, there could be reasons unknown to us as to why this happens. The subject is complex, but I hope people will realize that often the whole story has not been told, nor should it be.
