Letter to the editor: The world would change if we all told the truth

Mellowing with age (80) allows me more time to contemplate just how screwed up the world has become. I have come to the conclusion that if people just told the truth, our world would change dramatically.

It is said that once a person begins lying, it is all downhill from there, with the most lies being told by children to their parents. It is my opinion that there is a lot to be learned from the following quotes, hopefully a wake-up call to where we actually are as a nation. Things have gotten so bad that it is now acceptable to accuse a person of “lying all the time” when in reality the accusation is a lie.

“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.” — Henry David Thoreau

“There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily.” — George Washington

“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.” — Abraham Lincoln

“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.” — William J. Casey, former CIA director

“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” — George Orwell

I conclude with a sobering quote: “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.” — Thomas Jefferson
