Since the covid-19 pandemic has begun, our society has been focused on the loss of jobs, politics and racial injustice. Although these issues are important, there’s a population in our society that is overlooked and devalued and has thus been hit hard by the pandemic — those with intellectual and developmental diagnoses.

There has been minimal news coverage on the effects the covid-19 pandemic is having on this population. Some have complete or some understanding of why they are unable to participate in their activities, while others are unable to comprehend why they are unable to see their friends and families and go to their day/work programs.

Although some have started to resume their activities, many continue to remain isolated in their homes without any or minimal contact with loved ones. These people are afraid they won’t ever see their loved ones again. Many in this population endure verbal abuse and neglect, even physical abuse, at the hands of those who are trusted to care for them.

Those who feel that the covid-19 pandemic is a hoax, I challenge you to think about these special people who are unable to defend themselves. They are some of the kindest people you will ever meet.
