In response to Ken Goga’s letter “Amtrak an unwise investment” (Sept. 21, TribLIVE): A second Amtrak Pennsylvanian operating between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg would be a welcome addition for Western Pennsylvania travelers. The lack of public intercity transportation, decreasing percentages of licensed drivers, enhanced time utilization and significant unmet demand — given the strong ridership of the present daily train — make increased passenger rail service a worthy objective.
Comparing the Pennsylvanian as only used by Pittsburgh to Harrisburg travelers disregards the many riders from the intermediate stops (Greensburg, Latrobe, Johnstown, Altoona, Tyrone, Huntingdon, Lewistown) and surrounding communities. These towns have little or no bus or air service as an alternative to private automobiles. This lack of transportation choice for residents and visitors limits access to recreational, medical and business venues. The success of other routes, including the Harrisburg-Philadelphia line, shows increasing service is a catalyst for economic development and downtown and regional revitalization.
