Letter to the editor: Transit cuts violate the spirit of Virtue, Liberty and Independence
Disability Rights Pennsylvania (DRP) is deeply concerned about proposed cuts that devastate access for people with disabilities across both urban and rural parts of the commonwealth.
In Pittsburgh, 41 bus routes and much of the paratransit service area are on the chopping block. In Philadelphia, SEPTA may eliminate 50 routes and several rail lines. But rural and small-town riders aren’t spared — shared-ride programs in places like Juniata, Perry and Schuylkill counties are under growing strain. A 2025 analysis by the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association confirms the funding model is unsustainable, especially outside metro areas.
Public transit is not a luxury. It is essential for people with disabilities to reach jobs, doctors and daily life. These cuts risk isolating thousands.
If Pennsylvania truly stands for virtue, liberty and independence, we must invest in a transit system that ensures no one is left behind because they can’t get a ride.
