As a rebuttal to the letter “Learn from Hitler’s rise to power” (Jan. 25, TribLive), comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, I suggest the writer read Edward Gibbon’s “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.”

The reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire (vs. today):

• Political instability (polarization, crime, lack of confidence in elections).

• Shifting wealth and power to the Eastern Roman Empire (i.e., China).

• Wars of expansion with military defeats (i.e., Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine, Yemen).

• Political corruption (i.e., lies of collusion, a laptop, DOJ/FBI selective prosecutions).

• Incompetent rulers (i.e., green energy, foregoing energy independence with resulting inflation).

• Debasement of currency (i.e., inflation).

• Weakening of the frontier (i.e., open borders left undefended).

Emperor Caligula wanted to appoint his jackass to the Roman Senate. In 2020, the American electorate took one from the U.S. Senate and made him president.

What was it about peace, prosperity and a secure border from 2017 to 2021 that the letter-writer did not like, and when was he given a numbered wrist tattoo?
